It crystallizes trigonal and has a Mohs hardness of 7 and a density of 2.65 g\/cm³. The color is caused by iron (Fe³⁺) in the crystal lattice in combination with natural radiation. Calcite (CaCO₃) belongs to the calcite group, also crystallizes trigonal, is the reference mineral for Mohs hardness 3 and has a density of 2.71 g\/cm³. In the geodes from Artigas, whitish, well-formed calcite crystals sit on the quartz crystals. On this piece, dark amethyst is visible at the base of the calcite. The black dots on the calcite are tiny manganese nodules. In certain lighting, the calcite shows rainbow reflections inside. A narrow, reddish agate rim zone can be seen at the lower edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eLocality\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmethyst geodes of this type come from the flood basalts of the Paraná Province. The amethyst areas of Ametista do Sul in Brazil and Artigas in Uruguay are located there. The lavas formed around 134 million years ago during the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana. The Los Catalanes district near Artigas is one of the most important deposits of this type worldwide. Amethyst has been mined there for over 150 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eUse and Research\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA team led by the University of Göttingen examined the geodes from Los Catalanes in 2024 in the journal Mineralium Deposita. According to the measurements, the amethyst crystallized at only 15 to 60 °C.
