The composition is simplified as SiO\u003csub\u003e2\u003c\/sub\u003e (+Al\u003csub\u003e2\u003c\/sub\u003eO\u003csub\u003e3\u003c\/sub\u003e), with alkalis and iron oxides also present. The density is 2.34 to 2.46 g\/cm³, and the Mohs hardness is given as 5 to 7 depending on the source. Moldavite was formed by the melting and ejection of rock during the oblique impact of a meteorite, which also formed the Ries crater in Bavaria. Ar-Ar dating of moldavites from the Czech Republic yields an average of 14.68 ± 0.11 million years. Only very few finds are known from southwestern Poland.
