🪢 What exactly is a sliding knot?
A sliding knot – also called a girth hitch – is a self-securing knot that can be moved back and forth along a second cord. You tie two of them, one at each end of your piece of jewelry, and you have a clasp that loosens or tightens with a simple pull.
No carabiner. No spring ring. No soldering. Just cord and dexterity – and the result looks professional.
The big advantage for crystal jewelry: The stone remains in focus. No shiny metal distracts, no bulky clasp disturbs the overall appearance. Just pure energy on your wrist or around your neck.
"I wear my stone close to my body. Its energy accompanies every step I take."
🧵 What you need – materials at a glance
The beauty of it: You really don't need much. And what you do need is either already at home or can be found at the nearest craft store.
- Jewelry cord: Waxed cotton, thin paracord, or nylon (0.8–1 mm) are best. They glide smoothly, hold the knot securely, and feel comfortable against the skin.
- Sharp scissors ✂️ – a clean cut makes for a neat finish.
- Lighter: For sealing the ends of synthetic cords – briefly melt, done. For cotton, alternatively, a drop of jewelry glue.
- The centerpiece: A drilled gemstone or powerful crystal beads – hand-selected, natural, with real energy. 💎
💡 A little tip from Dany: The quality of the stone makes all the difference. A natural, untreated stone retains its color, surface – and energy – for many years. At Happy Minerals, you'll find drilled gemstones that we personally hand-select and ethically source.

✋ Step-by-step instructions
Here's everything again in detail for reference – ideal for looking up while you craft.
1️⃣ Cut cord and string stone
Cut your cord – for a bracelet, about 50 cm; for a necklace, about 80–100 cm. Now string your drilled gemstone or beads and push it to the middle of the cord. The ends remain free – they will soon become the knots.
2️⃣ Tie the first sliding knot
- Take the left end of the cord and lay it parallel to the right strand – this forms a loop.
- Wrap the end 3–4 times tightly and evenly around the right strand.
- Pass the end through the loop you formed at the beginning.
- Pull the knot slowly and evenly tight – it should be secure, but still able to slide.
💡 Important: Not too tight! The knot must still be able to slide back and forth on the cord. Test this immediately after tightening.
3️⃣ Tie the second sliding knot
Turn your piece of jewelry over and repeat exactly the same process on the other end – this time with the right end over the left strand. Now you have two knots that can slide towards or away from each other.
4️⃣ Test, trim, seal
- ✔ Slide both knots back and forth a few times – they should glide easily, but not come undone on their own.
- ✔ Trim the excess ends to approx. 3–5 mm.
- ✔ For nylon: Briefly melt the ends with a lighter, do not burn – just gently tap until a small ball forms.
- ✔ For cotton: Apply a tiny drop of jewelry glue to the ends.
🎉 Done! Your handmade, adjustable crystal jewelry is ready to wear – or give as a gift.

💎 Which stone should it be?
A knot is quickly made – but the real magic lies in the stone. The question is: Which crystal suits you right now, the person you're crafting for – or the intention you want to carry?
Here are our favorites for handmade jewelry:

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about the Sliding Knot
My knots don't slide – what am I doing wrong?
Usually, it's because the turns were pulled too tight or too firm. Gently loosen the knot and make it a bit looser. The choice of cord also plays a role: Very rough or thick cords slide less well. Waxed cotton or nylon are smoothest here.
How long should the cord be for a bracelet?
About 50 cm is a good starting point. This gives you enough leeway for both knots and the adjustable end. It's better to cut it a bit too long – you can always shorten it, but not lengthen it.
Can I secure the knot without a lighter?
Yes! For cotton cord, a small drop of clear jewelry glue or even regular all-purpose glue on the cut ends is sufficient. Let it dry completely before wearing the jewelry.
How do I care for jewelry with a sliding knot?
Avoid continuous contact with water – this softens the cord and eventually loosens the knots. It's best to remove it before showering, swimming, or exercising. This way, your bracelet will stay beautiful for a long time.
