❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Fluorite

Fluorite only has a Mohs hardness of 4 – is it fragile in everyday use?

With a Mohs hardness of 4, Fluorite is significantly softer than quartz stones like Amethyst or Rock Crystal. Additionally, it cleaves particularly easily in four directions. This makes it susceptible to knocks and scratches. As a gemstone, it should therefore be worn with a little more care than more robust crystals, and tumbled stones or raw pieces should preferably not be placed in the same bag as harder stones.

How do I properly cleanse and charge my Fluorite?

Only wipe Fluorite briefly and carefully with a soft, slightly damp cloth – long water baths or even ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided due to its softness and cleavage. Gentle moonlight is ideal for charging. It is better to avoid direct, prolonged sunlight, as some Fluorite colors can fade over time as a result.

How can I recognize real Fluorite?

Real Fluorite often shows its characteristic cubic or octahedral crystal structure, especially in raw pieces. A reliable test: under UV light, real Fluorite usually shows a clear, often blue-violet fluorescence – this phenomenon was even named after it. The typical cleavage in four directions and the comparatively low hardness (it can be easily scratched with a steel knife) are also reliable authenticity features.
