The zodiac sign Scorpio has three faces – and for each there's a stone

🦅 Stage 2 – The Eagle: Overview instead of Defense

The eagle is the Scorpio who has stopped reading every situation as a threat. It still sees everything – Scorpios never lose their perception – but it no longer has to react to everything. The stones of this stage support precisely this step: from vigilance to foresight.

Labradorite – the stone with the hidden depths

There is hardly any stone that looks so much like the zodiac sign it is assigned to. From the wrong angle, labradorite appears unassuming gray. Turn it a few degrees further, and suddenly a deep blue, a gold, sometimes a green flares up, seeming to come from within.

This phenomenon is called labradorescence. It is not caused by pigments, but by physics: in the feldspar, incredibly thin lamellae of differing composition formed during slow cooling. When light strikes these layers, it is refracted and superimposed – interference, the same principle as the shimmer of an oil slick on water. So the color is not in the stone, it arises at the moment of viewing.

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5. It is named after the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, where it was described in 1770; the particularly beautiful pieces on the market today mostly come from Madagascar and Finland. In crystal healing, it is considered a stone of intuition and an energetic protective shield – one sees through others without becoming transparent oneself. Pluto energy in stone form.

Aquamarine – when the water sign learns to speak

Scorpio is a water sign, but its water is often still and deep. Aquamarine brings movement into it. Its clear blue comes from divalent iron in the beryl lattice – the same mineral family as emerald and morganite, just with different trace chemistry.

With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8, it is at the top of this selection mineralogically and is ideally suited for daily worn jewelry. The classic origin is Brazil, especially Minas Gerais. A note on care: aquamarine can lose color with long, direct sunlight exposure – it's better to charge it in moonlight.

Energetically, it belongs to the throat chakra and is considered a stone for calm, clear expression. For a sign that prefers to resolve conflicts internally and then says everything at once in one sentence, this is a very useful quality.

🔥 Stage 3 – The Phoenix: Transformation through its own power

The third stage is the one Scorpio is famous for – and the least romantic in its execution. The phoenix doesn't burn symbolically. It truly lets go of something: a relationship, a profession, a version of itself that no longer fits. The stones of this stage accompany the transition.

Malachite – the stone that doesn't negotiate change

Malachite looks as if someone had banded growth itself. The concentric stripes in light and dark green are created by rhythmic precipitation: over long periods, copper carbonate is deposited in layers, each layer with a slightly different concentration. What you see is a timeline.

Chemically, malachite is a basic copper carbonate; the green comes directly from the copper. With a Mohs hardness of only 3.5 to 4, it is one of the soft stones – and this has practical consequences: Malachite should not be placed in water, in an ultrasonic cleaner, or aggressive cleaning agents. Wiping with a dry, soft cloth is sufficient. As a pendant, worn but not bathed, it is perfectly suited. The best-known occurrences are in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In crystal healing, malachite is considered a stone of transformation and letting go – known for bringing uncomfortable truths to the surface. It is not a gentle stone. But Scorpio only partially likes gentleness anyway.

Garnet – the Mars fire beneath the water

If malachite accompanies letting go, then garnet brings the strength for what comes next. Its deep red is the color of Mars, the traditional ruler of Scorpio – passion, perseverance, will.

Garnet is not a single mineral species, but an entire group with a common crystal structure and different chemistry: almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, and others. The Mohs hardness is 7 to 7.5 depending on the type; the typical crystal is a rhombic dodecahedron – a twelve-sided shape that can often be seen with the naked eye in raw pieces.

It gets particularly beautiful with star garnet: some almandines contain very fine, needle-like inclusions in an ordered alignment. When light strikes them, a four or six-rayed star appears, moving across the curved surface – asterism. For a sign that loves depth and sees through effects, a stone with a hidden light figure is just right.

🌑 Garnet-Arfvedsonite: The Scorpio stone almost no one knows

There is a stone that combines the three stages of Scorpio in a single piece – and it does not appear in any of the usual zodiac lists. Too unknown, too difficult to pronounce, too rare in trade.

Arfvedsonite is a dark sodium amphibole, deep black to black-green, with a blue-silver shimmer that moves across the surface like a streak of light when rotated. It is named after the Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson, who discovered lithium in 1817. The Mohs hardness is about 5 to 6, and the locations are Greenland, Norway, Canada, and Russia.

If you have ever heard of Nuummite: the two are closely related. Nuummite is also an amphibole from Greenland with the same characteristic shimmer, and the two are regularly confused in trade. If the "oldest stone on Earth" magic of Nuummite attracts you, you will find the same quality in Arfvedsonite.

What is special about our pieces: red garnet crystals are embedded in the dark Arfvedsonite rock. So you have both in one hand – the black depth of the first stage, the silvery flash of light of the second, and the red Mars fire of the third. In crystal healing, Arfvedsonite is considered a stone for self-observation and for recognizing patterns in one's own behavior. It hardly gets more Scorpionic.

🏹 Scorpio-Sagittarius Cusp (November 18–24): Fire meets Depth

If your birthday falls in the last days of November, you probably know the feeling: you're too serious for a Sagittarius and too adventurous for a Scorpio. People think you're open and then wonder how little they actually know about you.

Astrologically, two very different energies meet here: the fixed water sign Scorpio, which goes deep and stays – and the mutable fire sign Sagittarius, which wants to go out, seeks breadth, seeks meaning. The classic mistake in choosing stones is to take a separate stone for each side and hope for balance. This usually just pulls in two directions.

The elegant solution: Sugilite

For this transitional zone, there is a stone that truly bridges the gap: Sugilite, a deep violet to reddish-violet cyclosilicate.

Its color comes from manganese, and its Mohs hardness is 5.5 to 6.5. It was discovered in 1944 in Japan by petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, after whom it is named. The pieces seen on the market today almost exclusively come from a single source: the Wessels Mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field in South Africa. This makes Sugilite one of the truly rare stones – and the deposits there are finite.

Why it suits the cusp: In crystal healing, violet is the color of the Third Eye and the Crown Chakra – quest for meaning, foresight, the Sagittarius qualities. At the same time, Sugilite is considered a stone for emotional depth and for holding difficult emotions – the Scorpio qualities. It doesn't demand that you choose one side.

🌘 The Release Ritual for Scorpios

Scorpios find it hard to embrace rituals that sound like wellness. What works is something with a clear beginning and a clear end – and a decision within it.

A good time is the waning moon, ideally the days just before the new moon. If you really want to celebrate the sign: The new moon in Scorpio falls every year in the second half of October or the first half of November.

You will need: A first-stage stone (Apache Tear or Smoky Quartz), a third-stage stone (Malachite or Garnet), a piece of paper, and a bowl.

1. Place both stones in front of you – the dark one on the left, the red or green one on the right. The distance between them represents the path you are taking.
2. Take the dark stone in your hand. Feel its weight and inwardly name one single thing you are currently holding onto. Not three. One.
3. Write it down on the piece of paper. In one sentence, without explanation, without justification.
4. Fold the paper and place it under the dark stone. It will stay there overnight.
5. Now take the second stone in your hand and name what should take its place. Again: one sentence.
6. The next morning, tear or burn the paper – safely, in a fireproof bowl. Carry the second stone with you that day.

The ritual takes less than ten minutes. Its power lies not in its length, but in the fact that you have to commit to one thing – and that is surprisingly difficult for a sign that likes to penetrate everything simultaneously.
