The province of Artigas in northern Uruguay is considered the most important amethyst discovery site in the world. Here, the geodes are buried deep in basalt layers – some weighing several tons, the largest amethyst geode ever found from Uruguay measures five meters and weighs 14 tons. What makes this Galaxy Amethyst so extraordinary: The orange color and characteristic sugar crystal surface occur when tiny hematite and iron oxide inclusions settle on the amethyst tips during crystal growth.
