The province of Artigas in northern Uruguay is considered the world's most important amethyst deposit. Here, the geodes lie buried deep in basalt strata – some weighing several tons. The largest amethyst geode ever found in Uruguay measures five meters and weighs 14 tons. What makes this Galaxy Amethyst so extraordinary is its orange color and characteristic sugar-crystal surface. These arise when tiny hematite and iron oxide inclusions are deposited on the amethyst tips during crystal growth.
