This Girasol feels heavy and cool in the palm of your hand, and the soft, milky light within it instinctively makes you take a deep breath. The three spheres wonderfully differ from each other: The large L-sphere (48mm, 162g) shows a clear asterism – a genuine star effect – and also carries a colorful rainbow within it that flashes depending on the light. The M-sphere (47mm, 145g) is almost completely clear with a delicate shimmer, colorful rainbows, and a softer star. The small S-sphere (28mm, 32g) is half translucent, with one spot that reflects light particularly strongly. What makes Girasol so special and what is asterism?
Girasol is a milky variety of quartz (SiO₂) with a Mohs hardness of 7. What makes it special: It contains finely distributed inclusions – mostly microscopic hollow channels or fluid inclusions – that scatter light and thus create a soft, wandering sheen. In particularly high-quality specimens, this results in a genuine asterism: a star-shaped light reflection that moves across the surface when the sphere is rotated. This is not a processing effect, but a purely natural optical phenomenon that arises from the internal structure of the stone. Girasol is sometimes also referred to as "Blue Quartz" or "Moonstone Quartz", although mineralogically it clearly belongs to the quartz family.
How do I properly care for my Girasol sphere?
Girasol can be briefly rinsed with lukewarm water – as quartz with a Mohs hardness of 7, it is water-resistant, but aggressive cleaners should be avoided. Moonlight is excellent for charging – especially fitting, as Girasol is often associated with the lunar energy spectrum. Alternatively, place it on a selenite plate or gently smudge with Palo Santo or sage. Direct, intense sunlight for hours should be avoided, as it can affect the delicate appearance of some quartz varieties.
How do I recognize real Girasol – and what distinguishes it from moonstone?
Real Girasol feels cool, shows natural streaks, clouds, and internal structures – not a uniform, flawless mass. If you encounter homogeneously pale, heavy, or strikingly symmetrical specimens that are too cheap, be careful: sometimes simple milky quartz glass is offered as Girasol. Real natural stone always shows natural inclusions, crystal structures, or layering under strong light. In contrast to moonstone – which belongs to the feldspar group and shows a different, more bluish-shimmering adularescence – the Girasol shimmer appears softer, more diffuse, and milky-warm. The Mohs hardness (7 for quartz vs. 6 for moonstone) is also a distinguishing feature.
Do I see the star effect even in low light?
The asterism in Girasol is most pronounced with a pinpoint light source – a single lamp, a candle, or direct sunlight show it most clearly. In diffuse daylight, you primarily see the soft overall shimmer. With the spheres offered here, the star effect is particularly well developed in the L-sphere: Hold it under a pinpoint light source and slowly rotate it – you will see the star move across the surface. The M-sphere shows more of the gentle overall sheen, while the S-sphere creates a clear concentrated light reflection at its brightest spot.
