Libyan Desert Glass was formed about 29 million years ago when a meteorite or comet struck the Libyan Desert. The heat of the impact was so immense that the surrounding sandstone instantly fused into glass. Temperatures of over 1800 degrees Celsius were reached in fractions of a second. What remained was bright, yellowish, almost honey-colored natural glass, scattered across thousands of square kilometers of the Sahara. The most famous piece of Libyan Desert Glass is found in a necklace belonging to the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun —a scarab made of this glass, set in gold, lay in his tomb. The ancient Egyptians called it "Stone of the Sky" —little did they know how right they were. The gentle indentations on the surface of this pendant are not damage—they are the marks of the impact, polished by the Saharan winds over millions of years. 🌍

Yes – but with a twist. Classic tektites form when a meteorite strikes Earth, melting the terrestrial rock, which is then hurled through the air and resolidifies. Libyan Desert Glass originated somewhat differently: The sandstone of the Sahara itself was transformed into glass on the spot by the extreme heat of the impact – without flying through the air. Therefore, it is chemically purer and brighter than other tektites. A true natural glass, clearly formed by a cosmic impact. ✨
How do I care for my Libyan Desert Glass pendant?
Libyan desert glass is surprisingly robust – after all, it's glass that survived 29 million years in the Sahara. Nevertheless, handle it with care: wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it immediately. Do not drop it – like any glass, it can break upon strong impact. You can energetically cleanse it beautifully with incense or in moonlight. Keep the adjustable strap dry. ✨
