Libyan Desert Glass formed approximately 29 million years ago when a meteorite or comet struck the Libyan Desert – the impact's heat was so enormous that the surrounding sand rock instantly fused into glass. Temperatures over 1800 degrees Celsius in fractions of a second. What remained: bright, yellowish, almost honey-colored natural glass, scattered over an area of thousands of square kilometers in the Sahara. The most famous piece of Libyan Desert Glass is found in a necklace of the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun – a scarab made of this glass, set in gold, was in his tomb. The ancient Egyptians called it "Stone of Heaven" – and didn't know how right they were. The gentle indentations on the surface of this pendant are not damage – they are the signature of the impact, polished by the Sahara wind over millions of years. 🌍

Is Libyan Desert Glass a real tektite?
Yes – but with a peculiarity. Classic tektites are formed when a meteorite strikes the Earth and melts the earth rock, hurls it through the air, and it solidifies again. Libyan Desert Glass formed somewhat differently: the sand rock of the Sahara itself was directly fused into glass on site by the extreme heat of the impact – without flying through the air. Therefore, it is chemically purer and lighter than other tektites. A genuine natural glass, clearly formed by a cosmic impact. ✨
How do I care for my Libyan Desert Glass pendant?
Libyan Desert Glass is surprisingly robust – it is, after all, glass that has survived 29 million years in the Sahara. Still, handle it carefully: wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not drop it – like any glass, it can break on heavy impact. Energetically, you can clean it wonderfully with smudging or in moonlight. Keep the adjustable cord dry. ✨
