Ammonites are extinct cephalopods that lived in the Earth's oceans 65 to 400 million years ago. Their characteristic spiral shape follows the golden spiral – a natural perfection that cannot be replicated in any laboratory. The warm beige of these specimens from Madagascar results from the mineralization of the original calcium carbonate shell material over millions of years. How do I properly care for my ammonite pendant?
Ammonites are more sensitive than many minerals – please do not soak them in water for long periods and do not use an ultrasonic cleaner. To clean, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient; dab briefly and lay dry. Moonlight is wonderful for energetic charging, or placing it on a selenite plate. Direct, strong sunlight over a longer period can cause the color to fade slightly. Since the pendants are very thin and delicate, please do not bend or apply pressure – they are a fossil, not a stone, and are correspondingly fragile.
How do I recognize a genuine ammonite?
Genuine ammonites always show an organically grown, slightly irregular spiral structure – no pattern is perfectly symmetrical, and that is the hallmark of nature. Fake imitations or those cast from resin often appear too smooth and too uniform. The warm, matte surface of these specimens with slight color variations in beige and rust red is a clear sign of genuine fossilization. In iridescent ammonites (so-called ammolites), the surface shimmers in rainbow colors – these here are not iridescent.
