Does the scent of pearls fade over time?
Yes, the scent dissipates from the surface after some time, as the essential oils evaporate.
- The trick: You can gently rub the beads with very fine sandpaper or warm them between your palms. This releases the oils inside.

Which cord is best suited?
Because Palo Santo is a soft wood, the drill holes can sometimes be a little rough.
- Recommendation: Use a tear-resistant nylon or silk cord (approx. 0.7 mm to 1.0 mm thick). Nylon is particularly durable, while silk has a classic, soft drape.
- Tip: If you are knotting the mala traditionally, make sure to pull the knots tightly against the bead so that the wood does not "saw" at the string.
What is the ideal pearl size?
The standard for malas is 8 mm beads . 6 mm: Very subtle, the mala will be shorter.
Care and durability:
May I shower while wearing a Palo Santo Mala?
In short: No. Wood expands and contracts when exposed to moisture. Water leaches the natural oils from the palo santo, causing the beads to become brittle, lose their color, and in the worst case, crack. The string also suffers from the constant wet-dry cycle.
How do I clean the pearls?
If the beads have darkened due to skin oils or sweat, a dry, soft cloth is usually sufficient. If you wish to energetically cleanse them, the smoke from burning palo santo wood or a moonlit night is (ironically) suitable.
A little pro tip: Once you've finished your mala, store it in a cloth bag. This will keep the scent of the beads fresh for much longer than if they were left out in the open.
