What makes Tanzanite so special?
Tanzanite is a variety of the mineral zoisite and belongs to the sorosilicate group. It has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7 and is formed by hydrothermal processes under extreme pressure – which already makes it geologically extraordinary. What truly makes it unique: It exhibits pleochroism, meaning its color changes depending on the viewing angle and light – from deep blue-violet to a delicate reddish-violet. Globally, there is only one mining area, a narrow strip about 7 km long in the Mererani region of Tanzania. This makes it one of the rarest gemstones in the long term – and particularly valuable for collectors and stone enthusiasts.
How do I properly care for my Tanzanite pendant?
Tanzanite is more delicate than many other crystals – it should NOT be left in water permanently, as it can be brittle and moisture can damage the setting. For cleaning, a slightly damp cloth, gently dabbed, is sufficient. No ultrasonic bath, no steam cleaner, no aggressive cleaning agents! Since it has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7, it should not be stored loosely with other stones in a bag – it can easily be scratched. For charging, moonlight (especially full moon), a selenite crystal nearby, or a short smudging with Palo Santo or frankincense is recommended. Keep it away from direct sunlight – intense sunlight can affect its color in the long term.
How can I recognize genuine Tanzanite?
Genuine tanzanites show the typical pleochroism: Depending on the angle, it glows blue-violet, then a bit redder or bluer – this is a strong indication of authenticity. In this natural crystal, the pleochroism is not very pronounced. This is due to its rough, natural structure. In trade, dyed stones or synthetic imitations such as treated quartz or glass are common, which do not show this color change. Raw stones like this one are particularly authentic because they are not cut and therefore harder to imitate. What distinguishes Tanzanite from Amethyst or Lapis Lazuli?
At first glance, Tanzanite can be confused with Amethyst or deep blue Lapis Lazuli – but it is mineralogically completely different. Amethyst is a quartz variety, Lapis Lazuli is a rock mixture, while Tanzanite is a zoisite. Its unmistakable characteristic is the flowing play of colors between blue and violet – no Amethyst shows this depth, no Lapis Lazuli this shimmer. Energetically, Tanzanite is described as significantly more intense and transformative than both comparison stones – it is not a gentle companion, but a stone that initiates genuine inner processes.
