The name agate comes from the Sicilian river Achates, where Greek philosophers first described the stone—Theophrastus, a student of Aristotle, was so fascinated that he dedicated an entire chapter to it. In ancient Persia, magicians burned agates on altars, believing the rising smoke could ward off storms. The concentric bands you see in this disc tell a geological story spanning millions of years: layer upon layer, silica was deposited in a volcanic cavity—like the annual rings of a tree, only written in stone. Where the process wasn't completed, the glittering druzy crystals grew, lining the cavity like tiny diamonds. When candlelight filters through the translucent disc, all these layers come alive—a natural stained-glass window created by the Earth itself.

Can I use a real tea light or only LEDs?
Both work wonderfully! A real tea light creates the warmest, most vibrant play of light thanks to its natural hollow shape. An LED tea light is the safer alternative if the disc is to be left lit unattended. The tea light compartment in the wooden holder is designed for standard tea lights.
