Amazonite is a blue-green variety of microcline feldspar and gets its characteristic color from traces of lead and water in the crystal structure. With a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5, it is robust enough for everyday use. What makes these rough stones from Madagascar so special: they combine the vibrant blue-green of amazonite with the smoky brown to gray inclusions of natural smoky quartz – a duo of lightness and depth that perfectly complements each other mineralogically and energetically. The partially visible crystal structures of the smoky quartz make each stone a small wonder in itself.
How do I properly care for my Amazonite with Smoky Quartz?
Amazonite is not water-resistant – it is more sensitive than its robust appearance might suggest. Direct sunlight can fade its color over time, so it's better to store it in indirect light. It particularly likes to be charged in moonlight – simply place it on the windowsill overnight. Alternatively, smudging with sage or placing it on a selenite plate works wonderfully to energetically cleanse and recharge it.
How can I identify real Amazonite?
Real amazonite shows a characteristic white to cream-colored veining – the so-called perthitic texture – which results from parallel intergrowths within the feldspar. The color is never uniform like in dyed stones, but rather thrives on nuances between mint green and intense turquoise. In trade, dyed howlite or dyed magnesite sometimes circulate as a cheaper substitute – these appear too uniform under a magnifying glass and do not show natural veining. Our stones are sourced directly from reliable sources in Madagascar and are untreated.
What distinguishes Amazonite from Turquoise or Chrysocolla?
All three share the turquoise-blue color palette, but are mineralogically distinct. Turquoise is a phosphate mineral and often interspersed with brown or black veins (matrix). Chrysocolla is a copper silicate and appears more uniform and softer in color. Amazonite, on the other hand, belongs to the feldspar family, is significantly harder, and shows the typical white veining. If you place all three side by side, you'll immediately notice: Amazonite has that special lively depth that looks like layered water – unmistakable and unique.
