Chrysocolla is a copper-containing silicate mineral that forms through the weathering of copper ores – which is why it is often found near malachite, azurite, or turquoise. Its Mohs hardness is 2.5 to 3.5, making it a relatively soft stone. The vibrant turquoise to blue-green is characteristic and comes from its high copper content. Chrysocolla often occurs as a mixture with other copper minerals, which makes its color variety and patterning even richer. The specimen from Peru also shows a natural brown iron matrix – a typical feature of Peruvian finds.
Can I clean Chrysocolla with water?
No – Chrysocolla should not be cleaned with water. Its Mohs hardness of only 2.5 to 3.5 makes it sensitive: water can attack the surface and dull the vibrant color in the long run. It is best to clean it dry with a soft cloth or smudge it with sage or Palo Santo. Moonlight is wonderful for charging – a selenite crystal plate nearby also works. Direct, intense sunlight for extended periods can fade the color, but short sun moments are not a problem.
How do I recognize real Chrysocolla?
Real Chrysocolla shows an irregular, lively veining with color transitions from turquoise to blue-green to earthy brown and red tones – no two specimens look alike. Dyed howlite or colored stones are sometimes sold as Chrysocolla: these often appear too uniform in color and have no natural inclusions. Real Chrysocolla feels rough and porous, especially in its raw state. In our piece from Peru, the natural brown matrix on one side is another sign of its authenticity – this cannot be faked.
What distinguishes Chrysocolla from Turquoise?
At first glance, Chrysocolla and Turquoise do look very similar – both are copper-containing and shine in similar blue-green tones. The main difference lies in the mineral group: Turquoise is a phosphate mineral, Chrysocolla a silicate. Turquoise, with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6, is significantly harder and therefore more robust. Raw Chrysocolla often appears duller and earthier, while even unpolished turquoise has a certain density. Both stones are attributed to feminine, communicative energy – they complement each other wonderfully in a shared practice.
