Hematite is an iron oxide mineral (Fe₂O₃) with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 and is one of the oldest known minerals on Earth. Its name is derived from the Greek word for blood – haimatites – because it leaves reddish streaks in its raw state. When polished, it displays its characteristic dark gray, metallic luster, which makes it unmistakable. How do I properly care for my hematite bracelet?
Hematite tolerates brief contact with water but should not be soaked permanently – its iron content can develop oxidation marks with prolonged water exposure. No saltwater, no ultrasonic bath! It's best to charge it under the moonlight during a full moon or place it on a selenite plate overnight. Smudging with frankincense or Palo Santo is also a gentle and safe cleaning method. Direct sunlight for extended periods can dull the surface's luster – a shady spot is perfectly sufficient.
How do I recognize real hematite?
Real hematite is not magnetic – if a bracelet reacts strongly to metal, it is "magnetite" or so-called "hematite magnet," an industrially manufactured product that has nothing to do with real hematite.
