This Heliotrope Bloodstone pendant displays a rich petrol green, streaked with vibrant red flecks that glow like tiny sparks within the stone – each inclusion unique, formed over millions of years in the mines of India. It appears much darker in less light. I used very bright studio lighting only to highlight the beautiful red inclusions. The photos were taken in different lighting conditions. Since ancient times, the effects of heliotrope have been particularly valued for courage, strength, and deep protection – a stone to wear when you want to remain steadfast. It is considered a companion during emotional exhaustion, believed to ground and simultaneously activate: just the right balance for days when you need both. I recommend wearing it as a pendant directly on the body – as close to you as possible, so its grounding energy can truly take effect. In the Middle Ages, it was known as the "stone of warriors" – its red inclusions were revered as drops of the earth's blood.

What is Heliotrope (Bloodstone) and why is it so special?
Heliotrope – also known as Bloodstone – is a variety of chalcedony from the quartz group and consists of green chalcedony with characteristic red to orange inclusions of iron oxide (hematite or jasper). Its Mohs hardness is 6.5 to 7, making it a robust everyday companion. The name "Heliotrope" comes from Greek and means "sun turner" – ancient scholars believed its red reflection turned with the sun. No other stone so impressively combines the energy of earth (green) and fire (red) in a single piece.
How do I properly care for my heliotrope pendant?
Heliotrope can be briefly rinsed with lukewarm water. Since it belongs to the quartz group (Mohs hardness 6.5–7), it is durable but should not be stored with harder stones. You can wonderfully charge and energetically cleanse it on a selenite crystal overnight, with smudge smoke (sage or Palo Santo), or outdoors during a full moon. Direct, intense sunlight for hours can slightly alter the color long-term – however, short sunbathing for charging is perfectly fine. As a piece of jewelry, please do not use an ultrasonic cleaner.
How do I recognize genuine heliotrope?
Genuine heliotrope exhibits a dull to silky green – never a uniform, synthetic, monochrome green – and the characteristic red or orange flecks are irregularly distributed, never stamped or uniform. Since heliotrope is not as expensive as rare gemstones, there are few direct fakes; more common are poorly dyed agates or green jasper sold as bloodstone. A genuine heliotrope feels cool and smooth, shows a fine-grained structure under magnification, and the red inclusions appear three-dimensionally embedded, not painted on.
What distinguishes heliotrope from green jasper?
Both belong to the quartz family, but heliotrope is a chalcedony variety with a microcrystalline, slightly translucent structure, while jasper is completely opaque and fine-grained-matte. The most striking characteristic of heliotrope is its red iron oxide inclusions – these are completely absent in green jasper in this form. Energetically, both are valued for grounding, but heliotrope is also considered a protective and courage-giving stone with an activating quality that green jasper does not possess in this form.
