What is Iolite and why is it so special?
Iolite – also known as Cordierite or Water Sapphire – is a magnesium-iron-aluminum silicate and belongs to the cyclosilicate group. Its Mohs hardness is 7 to 7.5, making it suitable for everyday wear and robust. What's truly special is its strong pleochroism: depending on the viewing angle, it shimmers violet-blue, gray, or almost colorless – an optical phenomenon that makes it unmistakable. Raw pieces like this pendant often show a milky, less transparent quality, which, however, reflects the stone's natural character.
How do I properly care for my Iolite pendant?
Iolite can be briefly cleaned with lukewarm water – however, prolonged soaking is not recommended as it can affect the surface and the silver eyelet. Direct sunlight for extended periods can slightly fade the color, so it's better to store it in the shade. Moonlight is excellent for charging – simply place it on a windowsill overnight. Alternatively, let it rest on a selenite plate or fumigate with frankincense. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning at all costs.
How can I recognize genuine Iolite?
Genuine Iolite shows its typical color change depending on the viewing angle – this is the most reliable distinguishing feature. When you turn the stone, the color changes from violet-blue to gray or yellowish-white. Dyed glass or synthetic imitations do not show this effect. What distinguishes Iolite from Sapphire and Tanzanite?
The nickname "Water Sapphire" arose because Iolite optically resembles blue sapphires – however, mineralogically, the two are completely different. Tanzanite, on the other hand, is a variety of zoisite and also exhibits pleochroism, but is significantly more valuable and more saturated in color.
