What is Carnelian and why is it so special?
Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, belonging to the quartz group (Mohs hardness 6.5–7). Its characteristic orange-red coloration is due to iron oxide inclusions that have accumulated in the rock matrix over millions of years. The color varies from pale peach to deep reddish-brown – natural pieces often show irregular color distribution and slight layers within the bead. Carnelian from Brazil is considered particularly intense in color and is valued worldwide for its vibrant markings.
How do I properly care for my Carnelian bracelet?
With a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, carnelian is robust enough for everyday wear, but it does not like prolonged exposure to water – a quick rinse under running water is fine, but soaking or wearing it while bathing should be avoided, as it would damage the black cord. You can wonderfully charge it in moonlight or on a selenite plate overnight. Direct, intense sunlight for hours can fade the color in the long term – but a few minutes of morning sun as an energy boost is no problem. Smudging with sage or Palo Santo is a nice cleaning alternative.
How can I recognize real Carnelian?
