In ancient Egypt, Carnelian was the stone of the goddess Isis – pharaohs were buried with Carnelian amulets to be protected in the afterlife. Arab rulers wore it in signet rings, as it was believed to bestow authority and persuasiveness upon its wearer. Napoleon Bonaparte wore a Carnelian signet pendant as his most important talisman – he is said never to have taken it off. What distinguishes it mineralogically: Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, whose warm orange color is created by iron oxide – the same mineral that makes rust red and ocher yellow. How do I clean my Carnelian palm stone?
Carnelian is robust – rinse briefly under lukewarm water and dry thoroughly. No aggressive cleaning agents. Energetically, you can cleanse it wonderfully with smudging (Palo Santo pairs well with its fiery energy) or in moonlight. Unlike many other stones, Carnelian also tolerates short sunbaths well – it loves warmth and light. 🔥
What is the difference between Carnelian, Sardonyx, and Agate?
All three are varieties of chalcedony – thus closely related. Carnelian is uniformly colored in warm orange to red by iron oxide. Agate shows banded patterns of different mineral layers. Sardonyx is a combination of both – orange-red Carnelian layers alternate with white or brown Agate layers.
