What makes Nephrite Jade so special?
Nephrite is one of the two mineral types known as "jade" – the other is jadeite. Nephrite belongs to the amphibole group and consists mainly of actinolite or tremolite. Its Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5, and its toughness is remarkably high, making it extremely break-resistant. Canadian nephrite is considered particularly high quality and often shows this characteristic, intense grass green with fine darker inclusions. In crystal lore, it is described as a stone of the heart, patience, and long-term companionship.
How do I properly care for my Nephrite Jade pendant?
Nephrite Jade tolerates rinsing briefly with lukewarm water without problems – it is water-resistant with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, but please do not soak it permanently and do not use salt water. For energetic cleansing, we recommend smudging with sage or Palo Santo and charging it on a selenite plate or in moonlight. Direct, intense sunlight for hours should be avoided, as it can subtly alter the color over time. Please regularly check the black cord and replace it if necessary.
How do I recognize genuine Nephrite Jade?
Genuine nephrite feels cool and pleasantly heavy in the hand. There are many "jade" imitations on the market made of dyed quartzite, glass, or serpentine – these are often too uniformly green, too light, or too warm to the touch. Genuine nephrite jade usually shows natural inclusions, fibrous textures, and slight color variations when examined closely. What is the difference between nephrite and jadeite?
Both minerals are sold as "jade," but are mineralogically completely different. Jadeite belongs to the pyroxene group, is slightly harder (Mohs hardness 6.5 to 7), and is considered more desirable, especially in Asian cultures – imperial emerald green from Myanmar fetches collector's prices. Nephrite is tougher, softer in texture, and is found primarily in Canada, China, Australia, and New Zealand. For spiritual practice, both are equally valuable – nephrite is often described as the "people's stone among jades": accessible, warm, reliable.
