Peridot – also called Chrysolite or Olivine – is one of the few gemstones that doesn't form in the Earth's crust, but in the Earth's mantle, kilometers deep beneath our feet. Volcanoes bring it to the surface. And sometimes it comes from even greater depths: Peridot has been found in meteorites – it literally travels through space. The ancient Egyptians called it the "gem of the sun" and believed it glowed even in the dark. The island of Zabargad in the Red Sea was a millennia-old discovery site – so old that the Romans called it the "Serpent Island" because it was so well guarded. Cleopatra is said to have loved Peridot – and some of her famous "emeralds" were, in fact, Peridot. 🌋
