What is phantom quartz and what makes it so special?
Phantom quartz is a special form of rock crystal (mineral group of quartz, SiO₂, Mohs hardness 7) in which earlier growth stages appear as visible "phantoms" inside the crystal. These ghost images occur when crystal growth is briefly interrupted and minerals – often chlorite, hematite, or limonite – are deposited on the surface before the quartz continues to grow. In the present specimen, the phantoms appear as a rich, dark green due to enclosed chlorite mineral. Each phantom quartz is thus a unique record of its own growth – no other stone looks exactly the same inside.
How do I properly care for my phantom quartz pendant?
Rock crystal with a Mohs hardness of 7 is generally water-resistant and can be cleaned briefly under lukewarm water – rinse it gently and then dry it well. However, since this stone contains chlorite inclusions, I recommend not leaving it in water permanently, as chlorite can be more sensitive. Moonlight is particularly suitable for charging: place it on the windowsill overnight when the moon is shining. Alternatively, it charges wonderfully on a selenite plate, or you can energetically cleanse it with smudge smoke. Direct sunlight for extended periods can affect the clarity of the quartz – short sunbaths are not a problem.
How do I recognize genuine phantom quartz with chlorite inclusions?
Genuine phantom quartz shows clearly defined, often layered or contoured drawings inside – the "ghosts" of past growth phases. In chlorite phantom quartz, these inclusions are typically green, sometimes olive or dark green, and appear three-dimensional, as if floating in the stone. On the surface, genuine polished quartz feels cool and even. Be careful with extremely uniformly colored stones without internal structure – this could indicate dyed or treated stone. Natural chlorite quartz almost always has slight irregularities, natural veils or inclusion lines that no industrial product can replicate.
What distinguishes phantom quartz from ordinary rock crystal?
Ordinary rock crystal is clear and shows no internal contours of past growth stages.
