What is sunstone and what makes it so special?
Sunstone is an orange to reddish variety of oligoclase feldspar and belongs to the large plagioclase family. Its special feature lies in the so-called aventurescence effect: tiny inclusions of hematite or goethite scatter light and create a characteristic inner glimmer. Its Mohs hardness is about 6 to 6.5. The specimen in this bracelet comes from Tanzania – a location known for particularly strong, saturated orange tones and one of the highest quality sunstone deposits worldwide.
How do I properly care for my sunstone bracelet?
Sunstone can be briefly cleaned with lukewarm water. Direct, intense sunlight over a long period should be avoided, as it can lighten the color over time. For charging, we recommend moonlight overnight, a selenite plate, or gentle smudging with Palo Santo. It's best to remove it during sports and in water – this will keep the band beautiful and elastic for a long time.
How do I recognize real sunstone?
Real sunstone shows a lively, slightly irregular pattern of inclusions and natural color gradients – no two stones are exactly alike. In trade, sometimes dyed aventurine or orange-colored glass beads are sold under the name "sunstone" – these have no inner glimmer and appear too uniformly colored. Our sunstone from Tanzania is natural and untreated; the different orange tones within a batch are deliberately chosen and show exactly this natural variability.
