What is Sphene and why is it so special?
Sphene – mineralogically known as Titanite – is a calcium titanium silicate with exceptionally high light refraction and dispersion. This means it disperses light into colors more strongly than even diamond, which is why faceted specimens exhibit a fiery play of colors. As a raw crystal, like this piece, it displays its original natural form with natural crystal faces and points. It belongs to the group of rarer collector's minerals and is hardly available in jewelry quality – a true treasure for connoisseurs.
How do I properly care for my Sphene pendant?
Sphene has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5 – it is therefore more delicate than many other gemstones and should not be worn or stored with harder stones, as it can be easily scratched. No ultrasonic bath, no aggressive cleaning agents! It is best to clean it carefully with a soft, slightly damp cloth. It can be beautifully charged in moonlight or on a selenite plate. Direct, prolonged sunlight should be avoided, as some honey-colored titanites can fade.
How do I recognize real Sphene?
Real Sphene shows a resinous to adamantine luster on fracture surfaces and a characteristic rhombic crystal form. Its color varies from yellow-green to honey-yellow to brown, depending on titanium content and origin. It is rarely dyed or synthetically produced in trade, as it is one of the rarer minerals – nevertheless, it is worth paying attention to reputable dealers when purchasing. This piece comes directly from Brazil and is an untreated natural crystal.
Which chain goes well with this Sphene pendant?
Thanks to the 925 sterling silver eyelet, the pendant fits any standard chain with a round carabiner.
