What you see on the surface of this ruby has a poetic name: Asterism. Tiny, needle-like rutile inclusions inside the corundum are so precisely aligned that they refract light into a six-rayed star, or in this case, a bright shimmer – nature as a geometric artist. In ancient India, star rubies were called "Padmaraga" and were believed to contain the fire of the sun and the light of the stars simultaneously. Burmese warriors had rubies inserted under their skin, convinced that they would become invulnerable in battle. How do I clean and charge my Star Ruby?
Ruby is extremely robust with a Mohs hardness of 9. Gently clean it under lukewarm water and charge it in moonlight or on an amethyst geode. Since the silver eyelet is glued, you should not immerse the pendant in water for extended periods.
What is the best way to bring out the star?
The asterism shows up best under a single, pinpoint light source – for example, a flashlight, direct sunlight, or a candle. Move the stone gently back and forth and watch the shimmer travel across the surface. A true natural spectacle!
