This Sugilite Donut XL from the Wesselsmine quarry displays an intense violet hue with rare gray-blue richterite veins that flow through the rock like rivers. Sugilite was discovered in 1944 by the Japanese petrographer Ken-ichi Sugi – initially considered a geological curiosity. The world's only significant deposit is located in the Wesselsmine in South Africa , deep beneath the Kalahari manganese field, at a depth of over 800 meters. The rare richterite inclusions – those gray-blue veins that run through this donut-shaped stone – are formed by a particularly mineral-rich environment that is not always present, even in the Wesselsmine. No two sugilites are alike. The deposits are shrinking, the stone is becoming rarer. Those who buy today are holding something that will be harder to come by tomorrow. 🌍
