Sugilite was discovered in 1944 by Japanese petrographer Ken-ichi Sugi – initially considered a geological curiosity, today it's one of the world's most sought-after collector's stones. The only significant deposit is in the Wessels Mine in South Africa, deep beneath the Kalahari Manganese Field at over 800 meters depth. This makes it one of the few gemstones that truly exist in only one place in the world – and the deposits are shrinking.
