Sugilite is one of the rarest and most coveted gemstones in the world. First discovered in Japan in 1944 and named after the Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi, this exceptional stone today comes almost exclusively from the Wessels Mine in South Africa. Its intense violet color – from delicate lavender to deep royal purple – makes it an absolute favorite among collectors and crystal enthusiasts.
What makes Sugilite so special: The best specimens show a luminous, almost surreal violet that cannot be found in any other stone in the world. The more intense the color and the more translucent the stone, the rarer and more valuable it is. Some pieces show fascinating inclusions of black manganese, which give the stone a mysterious depth.
